Silicone Mold Food Techniques
Hey ghouls and creeps! I have a confession to make, I have a mold problem, a silicone mold problem to be more specific! I love collecting the food crafting items Wilton and other brands release for Halloween every year! Needless to say, I’ve accumulated a variety of silicone and candy melt molds. I’m not even going to get into the cookie cutters, cupcake cups, and goody bags that I have in my stash. That will be for another post!
Obviously, silicone molds are versatile and can be used for other projects involving resin, soap or candle making. In this post, however, I’ll be focusing specifically on four food crafting techniques. Everything from making creepy baked treats, spooky ice cubes, and macabre skull fruit pops will be covered! Let’s get started!
I rated the Silicone Mold Food Techniques as being easy! The awesome part about many of these projects is that if you do mess up, you can easily start over or melt the mold and try again!
Technique #1: Skull Cookie Bites: These took me a couple of rounds of trial and error to master this technique since I didn’t think my mold was oven safe initially. After researching Wilton’s candy molds I found out that their silicone molds are heat resistant up to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
I ultimately placed cookie dough in each cavity of the mold, placed the mold on a cookie sheet, and placed it in the oven for 7 minutes.
An alternative method is to freeze your cookie dough overnight. Remove the cookie dough from the freezer and allow the dough to thaw for about 30 minutes. Place cookie dough in your mold and then pop it back into the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Then take the cookies from the freezer and put them in the oven for 7 minutes.
Both techniques of baking within the mold and freezing the dough should keep your cookies from baking out and maintaining their shape. The end result is cute little skull bite cookies! Perfect for curbing that baked good craving without the regret!
Technique #2: Sugar Skull Cupcakes: Decorating cupcakes to look like they were purchased from a bakery was never so easy! Decorate your cupcakes with molded candy melt adornments to create the perfect sugar skull cupcakes!
I first melted approximately a quarter of the 10oz candy melt bag in a microwave-safe bowl following the manufacturer’s instructions. I then transferred the melted candy melts to a piping bag and used the bag to squirt into the candy mold. Pro-tip: If you trim a smaller opening into the piping bag then you’ll have more control!
After filling all the candy mold cavities I then took a toothpick to swirl the candy melts into all the nooks and crannies of the mold. Look at the level of the candy melts in the mold too, is it flush with the mold? If not, add more melted candy melts to the mold till level.
Place the filled candy mold in the refrigerator on a flat surface and chill for 15-30 minutes. After they’ve adequately chilled, remove the candies from the mold and place them on your frosted cupcakes!
Technique #3: Mad Scientist Ice Cubes: This technique is super easy, and is a clever way to add a creepy twist to those ice cold beverages. Simply fill your silicone mold with water and place in the freezer until solid. Gently remove the ice cubes from the mold and pop them in your drink before heading to the lab!
Technique #4: Skull Fruit Pops: These are great if you’re concerned about watering down your drink, or if you’re just wanting a macabre summer treat! Place some cubed fruit and juice in each mold cavity, I put watermelon and cranberry juice in mine! Consider options like orange juice, apple juice, or mango juice paired with fruit options like raspberries, strawberries or blueberries.
Put the filled mold in the freezer and allow to chill till solid. Put your pops in juice or if you have a popsicle stick slot in your mold you can make your pops as popsicles!
